A wolf interval occurs in the circle of fifths in certain temperament schemes. It is dissonant in the face of harmony. It is the interval whose imperfection makes the other fifths perfect. Tradition holds that its discord sounds like a wolf howling.
Editorial Introduction - Volume 11
Welcome to the eleventh volume of The Wolf Interval: A Multimodal Journal of Student Work at Juilliard. The purpose of this journal is to showcase the scholarly and artistic achievements of Juilliard students and, where appropriate, to provide models for other students to follow. This issue features words, images, and video that demonstrate the academic prowess, along with the creative and emotional depth, of the student body at The Juilliard School.
Work of this kind is always a joint venture, and here I wish to thank the Juilliard community. I thank the student contributors, first of all, for their willingness to share their work. And I thank my colleagues in Liberal Arts and Music History for identifying student work deserving of a wide audience.
Special thanks go to Nina Laube, the co-editor and designer of this journal.
I hope The Wolf Interval will spark a larger conversation about the intersection of scholarship and art in the Juilliard curriculum. Feedback and inquiries are welcome. Please contact me at writing.center@juilliard.edu with questions or comments.
Now, without further ado, please join us.
