A wolf interval occurs in the circle of fifths in certain temperament schemes. It is dissonant in the face of harmony. It is the interval whose imperfection makes the other fifths perfect. Tradition holds that its discord sounds like a wolf howling.

Editorial Introduction - Volume 4

Welcome to the fourth issue of The Wolf Interval: A Journal of Student Writing at Juilliard. The purpose of this journal is to showcase the writing of Juilliard students and, where appropriate, to provide models for other writers to follow.

It is our hope that readers will find the material contained here both beautiful and instructive.

Work of this kind is always a community venture, and communities must be thanked. We thank the student contributors, first of all, for their willingness to appear in the journal. We thank our colleagues in Liberal Arts, Drama, Dance, Music History, and Music Theory and Analysis who acted as scouts for the talent that appears here. We thank the administration for its material support, Rafael Tapia for his expert assistance in the printing process.

On a more personal note, I thank Chelsea Feltman and Veronica Ordaz, intrepid co-editors and designers, for everything they do.

We hope The Wolf Interval will spark a larger conversation about the place of writing at Juilliard. Feedback and inquiries are welcome. Please send them to writing.center@juilliard.edu.

And now, as they say, in bocca al lupo: into the mouth of the wolf.
