Joseph Shiner
Joseph Shiner is a clarinettist, writer, academic and educator who currently holds a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellowship at the Juilliard School in New York City. His research interests centre around LGBTQ+ musicology and the European fin de siècle, focusing on the life and work of Clement Harris. Joseph studies with Anthony McGill, principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic.
As a clarinettist, Joseph has appeared around the United Kingdom and internationally, with engagements at Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, Bridgwater Hall, Snape Maltings, Holywell Music Room and the Barbican Centre, as well as the Oxford Lieder, Ryedale and St Magnus International Festivals. A selected artist for Making Music and the City Music Foundation, he has been the recipient of the Hattori Foundation Senior Award, the Philip and Dorothy Green Award, the Maisie Lewis Young Artists' Fund, and the Musicians' Company Prince’s Prize. His performances have been broadcast on radio, and he has been featured as a 'Rising Star' for BBC Music Magazine.
Joseph has enjoyed collaborations with the Allegri, Endellion and Barbican quartets, as well as with pianists Somi Kim, Keval Shah, Michael Dussek, Christopher Glynn, Sholto Kynoch and Joanne Chang. In 2019, Joseph released his debut recording on Orchid Classics, surveying Brahms' works for clarinet with piano and 'cello with Somi Kim and Yoanna Prodanova. The disc was a Classic FM ‘Album of the Week’, and hailed by Gramophone for its 'stormy grandiloquence' and 'twilit poetry'. From 2012 to 2022, Joseph was a founding member of the award-winning ‘Magnard Ensemble’, active in recital, education and interdisciplinary project work, as well as recording music by Paul Patterson, Martin Butler, and Stephen Dodgson for Orchid Classics and Toccata Classics. In addition to performing with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Aurora Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Joseph is active in contemporary music, premiering works by Misha Mullov-Abbado, Kate Whitley and Freya Waley-Cohen. Joseph has appeared as soloist with ensembles including the Mozart Festival Orchestra, the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of London, the City of Southampton Orchestra, the Wimbledon Symphony Orchestra, the Outcry Ensemble, the Orion Orchestra, the New Cambridge Sinfonia, the Young Musicians' Symphony Orchestra and the Cambridge University Sinfonia (formerly the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra).
Joseph's pedagogical activities range from instrumental, chamber and orchestral coaching to tuition in music theory and history, as well as practical/aural skills and essay writing, at institutions including Eltham College, Lancing College, the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department and the Juilliard School. Joseph has co-ordinated and led community projects for the Musicians' Company, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Magnard Ensemble, the Royal Academy of Music Open Academy and Wigmore Hall Learning.
After specialist study at Wells Cathedral School with Kevin Murphy and Timothy Orpen, Joseph graduated from both Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music, London with First Class honours, studying with David Campbell, Mark van de Wiel, Angela Malsbury and Andrew Marriner.
